If you don't know the difference between goods-to-person and person-to-goods, you might inadvertently approve a design that doesn't actually fit your workflow. When you understand the terminology, you can ask the right questions: "If we transition our current layout to a VNA configuration to increase our storage density, what would the throughput impact be if we added five automated swing reach trucks to our fleet?" Top 10 Warehouse Operation Acronyms
- FIFO (First In, First Out): A method where the oldest inventory items are sold or used first. Essential for perishables.
- LIFO (Last In, First Out): The newest inventory is used first. This works well in bulk storage where getting items in and out quickly matters more than the age of the product.
- AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle): Mobile robots that move pallets or carts, using smart sensors or cameras to map their path and navigate your floor.
- AS/RS (Automated Storage & Retrieval System): Computer-controlled system that automatically puts inventory away in trays and brings it back to you when you need it. Can handle small parts and totes as well as large pallets and odd-sized products.
- WCS (Warehouse Control System): This is the brain that connects your high-level warehouse management software to the actual machines on the floor.
- PLC (Programmable Logic Controller): The rugged, industrial computer that tells your equipment exactly what to do—think of it as the "muscle memory" of the machine.
- HMI (Human-Machine Interface): This is just the screen or dashboard an operator uses to talk to the machines, check status or fix minor hiccups.
- VNA (Very Narrow Aisle): A racking layout meant to squeeze as much storage as possible into a footprint. These aisles are tight—typically between 5 and 7 feet wide—and require special forklifts to navigate.
- VLM (Vertical Lift Module): This is a specific type of AS/RS. It’s essentially a tall, enclosed tower of trays that automatically brings the item you need right to your workstation, saving your team from climbing ladders or walking miles.
- FPM (Feet Per Minute): This is just how we measure how fast a conveyor is moving.

- Flue Space: The distance between rack rows or pallet loads when racks are back-to-back. Critical for protecting building columns, meeting local building codes and creating sprinkler system effectiveness.
- Lines vs Orders vs Units per Hour: The math of your warehouse. Knowing your average lines/orders/units per order helps us design a system and picking stations that fit your products and packaging.
- Goods-to-Person (GTP/G2P): Automation brings the inventory to the picker, eliminating walking time.
- Person-to-Goods (P2G): The traditional model where the picker travels to the product location. Great for pairing with autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to reduce employee travel burden.
- Clear Height: The distance from the floor to the lowest hanging obstacle (lights, sprinklers, trusses). It defines your vertical storage limit and forklift specifications.
- Accumulation Conveyor: A conveyor section that can hold onto products temporarily, letting them "queue up" without hitting each other.
- Motor Driven Roller (MDR): A conveyor where each roller is driven by individual motors—think run-on-demand. Often used for energy-efficient zone control.
- Zero Pressure Accumulation: Logic that keeps packages from touching each other while on a conveyor. It’s a must-have if you're dealing with fragile goods that shouldn't bump into each other.
- Turntable: No vinyl here. A conveyor section that can rotate, helping us turn items 90 or 180 degrees to switch them from one conveyor line to another.
- Throughput: A fancy word for your "output." It’s just the total amount of product your system can process in a certain amount of time.
